Misuse of Contact Lenses Responsible for Microbial Corneal Infections
Sunday, April 20, 2008
Latest studies suggested 40 per cent of microbial corneal infections in Bahrain were caused by misuse of contact lenses. This is one of the main reason why the doctors of the Salmaniya Medical Complex, Bahrain issued a circular informing the staff for immediate reporting of such cases, to the ophthalmology department. Bahrain witnesses a sharp increase in the number of eye problems caused by misuse of contact lens, sources says. Doctors also have said that maximum number of such cases are left unnoticed.
Hospital sources have said they receive at least 10 such cases every day especially in the Accident and Emergency Department. A majority of such cases occur due to Pseudomonas bacteria, which are described as dangerous microbes affecting the cornea. Doctors blame the habit of sleeping with the lens as one major reason behind the problems. The cornea gets deprived of the oxygen which makes it more prone to infections, sources said. Dr Cheriyan however, urged people to consult doctors before they purchase lens, to avoid further problem.
